Marine businesses are getting more and more involved in Instagram, but lots are still thinking about it. We spoke to some of them at Southampton and they were keen for some advice. Here are our top tips to help get you started.
Use a public account (not private) so content can be seen by everyone. Switch to a Business Profile to access special features and insights.
It is primarily for mobile use. You can log in and view images on the desktop site, but posting is not possible directly.
Your bio is your only chance to link to other profiles or website – you can’t put links in posts.
Follow other accounts and hashtags used in the industry – Its good to benchmark what others are posting and what is popular.
Hashtags make your posts searchable and allow non-followers to find your content. Users can save relevant hashtags and “Top Posts” from that hashtag will appear in their news feed. You can use up to 30 hashtags, however, best practise is around 5-7 to avoid diluting them.
Instagram uses a complex algorithm to determine what gets seen or not. It is important to create interesting posts and post frequently. Using Instagram stories and posting video content will drive higher engagement. The Instagram algorithm relies on hashtags to designate “Top Posts”, which get shared to people’s news feeds.
Always tag other accounts into your posts where relevant to drive engagement from other audiences.
Instagram offers marine businesses a powerful way to connect visually with customers, showcase products, and share stories that inspire. By optimising your profile, using hashtags strategically, and posting engaging, consistent content, you can grow your reach far beyond your existing audience. Remember, the more value and interest you create for your followers, the more the platform will reward you with visibility. Start small, stay consistent, and let your brand’s personality shine through every post.
