Staying Visible Without METSTRADE

The challenges of 2020 continue with the confirmation that METSTRADE, the world’s largest trade exhibition for marine equipment, has been cancelled. For many of us, the annual trip to Amsterdam is more than just a date in the diary - it’s a chance to reconnect with colleagues from across the globe, discover the latest innovations, meet new partners, and finalise important deals. Its absence this year will be felt by all.
But while we may not be gathering in person, there are still plenty of ways to maintain momentum, nurture relationships, and create new opportunities. The key is to think creatively, reallocate some of your METS budget, and focus on keeping your business visible.
Here are some practical alternatives:
Host virtual meetings – If you can’t meet face-to-face, make it happen online. Arrange video calls with existing customers, prospects, and partners to maintain personal contact and keep conversations moving forward.
Create video content – Videos are one of the most effective ways to share updates, demonstrate products, and tell your brand story. Start a YouTube channel or use social platforms to post short, engaging clips. They don’t need to be Hollywood-quality -authenticity often resonates more strongly.
Reconnect on LinkedIn – Dust off the business cards you collected at last year’s show and reach out via LinkedIn. When sending connection requests, include a personal note to build rapport and remind contacts of your previous conversations.
Share your news – Product launches, distributor searches, or company updates still deserve attention. Write professional press releases and share them with key industry media such as METSTRADE News, Boating Business, and other global trade titles to reach a wider audience.
Send regular newsletters – Keep your customers and suppliers informed with consistent email updates. Tools like Mailchimp make it easy to design and distribute newsletters, but remember to follow GDPR rules when contacting customers.
Look out for virtual opportunities – Stay tuned for digital initiatives from METSTRADE and other organisers. Virtual events, webinars, and online showcases can still connect you to valuable audiences.
The show may not go on this year — but your business must. By staying proactive, visible, and connected, you’ll ensure that the absence of one event doesn’t mean a loss of opportunity.
